In some spiritual circles, solitude is believed to enhance spiritual growth by releasing the aspirant from many of the duties and complications of partnership and family life. Yet there are no fixed rules suggesting that either the single or married life leads more di
rectly to spirituality.

The solitary life offers opportunities for introspection, independence, and inner reflection. Relationships and family life, on the other hand, provide experience through the constant interaction of personalities in the external world. Both can become important avenues of spiritual development.

Relationships play a significant role in soul development, particularly within an esoteric system in which the Second Ray of Love-Wisdom is a governing influence within our solar system and the Fourth Ray of Harmony Through Conflict is closely associated with humanity. One means of evolving consciousness is through learning to balance masculine and feminine qualities, both within oneself and in relationship with others.

The solitary life may serve a particular purpose in the soul’s development. There may be periods when withdrawal from intimate involvement allows greater reflection, healing, or freedom from complicated relationships. Changes in lifestyle, cohabitation, or partnership can also impose pressures that neither person consciously chose.

Karma may determine whether an individual has obligations toward others and when those obligations have been fulfilled. Sometimes a relationship reaches a painful or harmful standstill, and both partners need to move on. Old patterns of dependency, control, or emotional attachment may then give way to the introspection that solitude provides.

Relationships, however, remain one of the fundamental processes through which society functions. A solitary life may be healthy and spiritually productive, but solitude can also become a means of avoiding intimacy when it is motivated primarily by fear.

Sometimes a person repeatedly becomes attracted to partners who are emotionally unavailable, already committed elsewhere, or unwilling to enter a stable relationship. Feelings may remain unreciprocated, or circumstances continually arise that prevent deeper involvement. Changing jobs, relocating, financial difficulties, lingering attachments to former relationships, or other obligations can conveniently postpone intimacy.

When such circumstances recur again and again, one might ask whether the outer situation is reflecting an inner reluctance to form a deeper bond.

Flitting from one brief relationship to another may temporarily satisfy the ego while preventing the more difficult discovery of the self that sustained intimacy can bring.

Why, then, do some people avoid life partners, reject suitable relationships, or repeatedly choose inappropriate ones?

One of the central challenges of partnership is that intimacy makes us vulnerable. It exposes qualities of the personality that can remain hidden in more casual encounters. The ego cannot easily conceal itself from the scrutiny of another person over a long period of time.

For this reason, the fear of intimacy may actually be a fear of self-revelation.

The ego prefers “safe” encounters in which little is demanded and little is exposed. A relationship that cannot become permanent may sometimes feel less threatening because one can remain partially hidden. Yet repeated avoidance of intimacy can eventually lead to emotional isolation.

Where the personality is reasonably integrated and honest, intimacy becomes less threatening. This is not to suggest that all married people or committed partners are emotionally mature. Partnership itself guarantees nothing. It merely offers the willingness—and the opportunity—to face one’s reflection in another human being.

A close relationship can become a mirror.

Through it we discover our possessiveness, generosity, insecurity, patience, jealousy, compassion, fear, and capacity for love. Another person can reveal parts of ourselves that solitude may never uncover.

For many people, intimacy and love therefore become important instruments of spiritual growth and self-understanding. To love another deeply also requires some capacity to accept and understand oneself.

Yet there are as many people who enter relationships for unhealthy reasons as there are those who avoid them. Fear of loneliness, dependency, social expectation, financial security, or the desire to possess another person can all masquerade as love. Conversely, many well-integrated single people deliberately choose a solitary life and find it deeply fulfilling.

Neither marriage nor singlehood is spiritually superior.

What matters is the consciousness brought to either condition.

Relationship gives us an opportunity to test, discover, adjust, and refine ourselves upon many levels of consciousness. Perhaps it is our deep impulse toward wholeness that continually draws one person toward another.

Through attraction and separation, harmony and conflict, intimacy and solitude, we gradually learn what love asks of us.

In the pain and the glory of union, mankind advances toward the ideal of love.

The single life has become an increasingly common choice of lifestyle.
